○ IJCAI(International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence)는 인공지능 분야의 최신 이론과 기술을 공유하는 세계적인 국제학술대회로, 올해는 제29회 유럽인공지능학술대회(ECAI)와 공동으로 개최됐다.
□ 연구팀은 이번 학술대회의 AI4Tech 특별트랙에서 ‘DEPLOY-RL: Active Boundary Discovery and Conservative Certification for Deployable Reinforcement Learning in Safety-Critical Continuous Processes’라는 연구 성과를 구두 및 포스터로 발표했다.
□ Professor Lee Sang-geum of the Department of Computer Engineering at Hanbat National University (President Oh Yong-jun) and the EcoAI Lab research team, led by him, drew attention by presenting two research achievements in the fields of industrial reinforcement learning and quantum control at IJCAI-ECAI 2026, held in Bremen, Germany, from the 15th to the 21st.
○ IJCAI (International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence) is a global international conference that shares the latest theories and technologies in the field of artificial intelligence. This year, it was held jointly with the 29th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI).
□ The research team presented their research achievement titled 'DEPLOY-RL: Active Boundary Detection and Conservative Certification for Deployment-Ready Reinforcement Learning in Safety-Critical Continuous Processes' through oral and poster presentations at the AI4Tech special track of this conference.
○ This study, with graduate student Yeo-Jin Jang as the first author, addressed the 'deployment reliability" problem that arises when reinforcement learning policies are practically applied in continuous processes where safety is critical, such as in chemistry, manufacturing, and energy.
○ Existing reinforcement learning policies had a limitation: even if they performed well in simulations, they could not fully guarantee safety when deployed in real-world processes.
○ To address this, the research team proposed 'DEPLOY-RL,' an authentication framework that verifies the safety of trained policies before deployment.
○ DEPLOY-RL focuses on exploring high-failure-risk boundary areas and, based on verification results, classifies policies as 'Deploy', 'No-Deploy', or 'Abstain'.
○ In addition, a fail-safe fallback based on existing PID and MPC controller systems has been implemented, allowing the existing control system to take over if verification is insufficient or if there is a risk.
○ The study was co-authored by graduate students Minwoo Baek and Kihoon Gil from Hanbat National University, integrated undergraduate and master’s students Minseong Jeong, Beomdo Park, Hyunseok Jang, and Junseong Park, alumnus Woohyun Kwon, Professor Sanggeum Lee, and researchers Neha Sengar and Andres Saurez from KAIST. It will be published in the official proceedings of IJCAI-ECAI 2026.
□ In addition, the EcoAI Lab research team at the Hanbat National University presented their research achievements in the field of quantum control through a poster at the '4th International Workshop on Generalization Using Limited Resources in Open Environments (GLOW@IJCAI 2026),' held concurrently with IJCAI-ECAI 2026.
○ The research titled 'When the Curriculum Is Critical: Automated Physics-Grounded Task Progressions for Open Quantum Control,' in which a student from Junsung Park’s integrated master’s and doctoral program served as the first author, proposes a curriculum reinforcement learning method that automatically constructs learning tasks reflecting the laws of physics and progressively increases task difficulty according to learners’ state of learning.
○ This study proposed the possibility of improving the learning efficiency and stability of reinforcement learning policies in open quantum-adjacent environments, where limited learning resources and complex physical constraints are present.
□ Professor Lee Sang-geum said, "This achievement is highly significant because graduate students and integrated undergraduate–master’s program students took the lead in researching real-world problems in industrial reinforcement learning and quantum AI, and presented their results at a world-class academic conference." He added, "We will continue to actively support students so they can grow into professionals equipped with international research experience and problem-solving capabilities in industry."
