○ 본 연구는 국립한밭대 응용소재공학과 홍유택 대학원생(現 ㈜미코파워)이 제1저자, 김정현 교수가 교신저자로 참여했으며, 연료전지 및 수소분야의 저명한 국제학술지 Journal of Power Sources 696권(2026)에 ‘Regulating Co-rich surface segregation in layered perovskite cathodes for low-resistance intermediate-temperature SOFC operation’이라는 제목으로 지난 16일 온라인 공개됐다.
□ 이번 홍유택 연구원의 논문은 지난 11일 같은 저널(Journal of Power Sources 695권, 2026)에 실린 임유리 대학원생의 연구 ‘Enhanced electrochemical performance of non-stoichiometric SBSCO cathodes for IT-SOFC via Co nitrate impregnation’와 한 팀에서 연이어 발표한 자매 연구로, 두 논문 모두 김정현 교수가 교신저자이며 서로 공동저자(임유리)로 참여해 층상 페로브스카이트 공기극의 ‘코발트 표면 화학’이라는 공통 주제를 다뤘다.
□ Professor Kim Jeong-hyun's research team from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Hanbat National University (President Oh Yong-jun) identified the cobalt (Co) surface exsolution phenomenon occurring in cobalt-substituted layered perovskite solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) air electrodes and proposed a novel technology that dramatically adjusts and reduces the air electrode resistance of intermediate- and low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC) by effectively controlling this through complexation with gd-doped ceria ion-conductors.
○ This research, with graduate student Hong Yutaek from the Department of Applied Materials Engineering at Hanbat National University (currently at Micropower Co., Ltd.) as the first author and Professor Kim Jeong-hyun as the corresponding author, was published online on the 16th in the prestigious international journal Journal of Power Sources (2026) under the title 'Regulating Co-rich surface segregation in layered perovskite cathodes for low-resistance intermediate-temperature SOFC operation.'
□ Layered perovskite air cells are gaining attention as materials for IT-SOFCs due to their excellent ion-electron hybrid conductivity, but higher cobalt substitution ratios cause cobalt leaching at elevated temperatures.
○ While this cobalt leaching can contribute to performance by increasing the electrochemical activation threshold, if it proceeds excessively, it can cause particle coarsening and interfacial instability, leading to a long-term decline in electrochemical performance; therefore, identifying its causes and control methods remains an important challenge.
○ To address this, the research team applied SBCF-CGO samples, a ceria-based oxide complex, to a single air electrode and found that the area fraction of cobalt leaching particles decreased from 10.78% to 3.22% and the average particle size dropped from 5.9 nm to 2.2 nm at 600°C.
○ Furthermore, long-term exposure to high temperatures demonstrated stable resistive behavior without rapid degradation, indicating that the composite not only expands the ionic conduction pathway but also contributes to the regulation of irreversible cobalt leaching behavior.
□ This paper by Researcher Hong Yutaek is a sister study published in the same journal (Journal of Power Sources, Vol. 695, 2026) as graduate student Lim Yuri's study 'Enhanced electrochemical performance of non-stoichiometric SBSCO cathodes for IT-SOFC via Co nitrate impregnation' on the 11th; both papers have Professor Kim Jeonghyun as the corresponding author, with Lim Yuri as co-author, addressing the common theme of 'cobalt surface chemistry' in layered perovskite air electrolysis.
○ However, the two studies take contrasting approaches to cobalt. Graduate student Lim Yu-ri’s prior research involved impregnating cobalt nitrate solution into SBSCO air jets, which are relatively deficient in cobalt, to artificially 'induce' cobalt leaching, thereby increasing the activation point and lowering the interfacial charge transfer resistance to reduce ASR by about two times.
○ In contrast, Researcher Hong's study adopted a strategy of controlling excessive cobalt leaching rather than simply filling in the cobalt deficit by suppressing and regulating excessive cobalt leaching particles during high-temperature operation in high-cobalt SBCF compositions through ceria complexation, thereby preventing interface instability caused by particle coarsening and reducing resistance.
○ In summary, the Hanbat National University research team has consecutively demonstrated that the irreversible surface state of layered perovskite air cells can be precisely engineered using two complementary strategies: 'filling up when cobalt is low (inducing diffusion)' and 'controlling it when cobalt is high (controlling leaching),' consistently showing that cobalt surface chemistry is a key factor determining the performance of IT-SOFC air cells.
□ Corresponding author Professor Kim Jeong-hyun of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering said, "This study quantitatively identified the cobalt leaching phenomenon in cobalt-rich layered perovskite air electrodes and demonstrated that it can be controlled through ceria complexation. Combined with our previously published cobalt impregnation research, we have secured two design strategies for inducing or suppressing cobalt surface chemistry as needed, and we expect these to be widely applied in the future to the design of high-performance, high-durability IT-SOFC air electrodes."
○ First author Researcher Hong Yutaek stated, "The key achievement of this study was confirming precursors that appear before cobalt leaching through TGA, DSC, and XPS analyses, directly observing the formation and growth of actual cobalt leaching particles using real-time transmission electron microscopy (In-situ TEM), and linking the characteristic that ceria complexation controls the leaching behavior itself to impedance analysis."
