□ 한편, 본 연구는 지난 28일 사이언스 어드밴시스 학술지에 ‘Momentum quantization of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in photonic-crystal cavity'라는 제목으로 게재됐다.
□ Professor Jangwon Lee's research team at Hanbat National University (President Oh Yong-jun) and a joint research team at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science overcame the optical limits of two-dimensional semiconductor materials and fabricated a new nano-optical cavity (resonator) that quantizes the momentum of phonon polarons, publishing their findings on the 28th in the international journal Science Advances (IF 13.9, top 8% in JCR).
[ Implementing the Quantization of Momentum of Hyperbolic Phonotropoleons Using Photonic Crystals Resonators ]
□ The hyperbolic phonon polaritons found within hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) exhibit different dispersion properties depending on their orientation, making them a promising core platform for next-generation mid-infrared nanophotonics.
○ However, it has been technically challenging to implement loss or high-Q resonant states due to the continuous distributed connections.
○ To address this issue, the research team devised the 'Hypervolumonic Cavity Crystal (HPCC),' which combines a photonic-crystal nanocavity structure with a thin boron nitride film.
○ By inducing the Fabry–Pérot topological coherence condition through periodic boundary surfaces, we succeeded in converting continuous dispersion relations into quantized discrete momentum eigenstates.
[ Visualization of the actual space and proof of ultra-high efficiency using advanced optical microscopy ]
□ The research team designed and fabricated photonic crystals using nanofabrication techniques and precisely measured the strength of the strongly confined electromagnetic field inside by employing Photo-induced Force Microscopy (PiFM).
○ Through this, they succeeded in directly measuring the quantized modes trapped within the nanostructure in both momentum and real space.
○ The cavity structure has been demonstrated to achieve both a high quality factor (Q-factor) and an ultra-compact mode volume while producing a high Purcell effect, and it is expected to be widely applied in the future to high-sensitivity spectroscopy, selective vibroscopy, and the development of reconfigurable mid-infrared nanophotonic devices.
□ Meanwhile, this research was published on the 28th in the journal Science Advances under the title ‘Momentum quantization of hyperbolic phonon polaritons in photonic-crystal cavity.’
○ This research was conducted jointly by Professor Jangwon Lee's team at Hanbat National University and Dr. Junghoon Jang's and Dr. Eunseong Lee's teams at the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science, with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT's Excellent Individual Basic Research Program and the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science's Strategic Research Project for Building a Quantum Materials Performance Evaluation Platform.
