논문 초록 (Abstract)

Coal tar is a by-product of the coal industry and a complex feedstock whose direct utilization is hindered by its high aromaticity, high viscosity and density, diverse impurities, and heavy condensed fractions. Catalytic upgrading is therefore essential for refining coal tar, converting heavy fractions into lighter products, and tailoring precursor properties for specific applications. This review covers coal tar catalytic upgrading in three main sections: hydrofining (sulfur, nitrogen), cracking upgrading, and catalytic preparation for high-quality carbon material precursors. With a particular focus on real coal tar systems, it discusses how catalyst properties such as active metals, supports, acidity, pore structure, and metal-support interactions govern reaction pathways and product distributions. Accordingly, this review proposes catalyst design directions for each process and aims to advance the practical understanding of catalytic upgrading for the industrial utilization of coal tar.
