(Abstract)
This study aims to research the meaning of Yi, Kwang-su’s Prince Maui and Sad history of Danjong which was written based of historical facts from the point of condolence and gloomy(melancholy) for loss. Condolence expropriates the present orders with accepting the loss but gloomy keeps the desire for the lost thing with resorting the loss. Besides condolence is self-preservative, gloomy is self-destructive so it denies the present and goes to the failure. Prince Maui and Sad history of Danjong show a victor hero’s nihilistic sorrow and a defeater martyr’s sublime sacrifice through their confronting about some loss. In Prince Maui the first volume narrates a hero Gung-ye’s feeling of condolence and nihil from his revenge for the loss, and in the second volume narrates a martyr prince Maui’s sorrow and sublime sacrifice from regarding himself with the lost thing. In Sad history of Danjong, the intelligent hero who condolent dead Munjong’s will so persue his greed is contrasted with the gloomy martyr who unite themselves with the will so became dead with Danjong. These novels arouse a possibility of resort to Colonial society with emphasizing the moral spirits and criticise on the changes of those days. A gloomy subject’s resort emerges to a ghost’s crying and it threaten the victor with sorrowful madness. Prince Maui and Sad history of Danjong call colonial readers the name of gloomy subjects who identified with loss through arousing victor’s nihil and loser’s sublime.
