논문 국내 국제전문학술지(SCI급) Framing Thought in Projective Media: Comments on an innovative drawing technique in Korean architectural scene of the 1980s

논문 초록 (Abstract)

Korean architecture in the 1980s witnessed the emergence of a new type of presentational drawing in architecture: complex to the point of indecipherability, graphically sophisticated, and sometimes seemingly done for its own sake rather than to represent a particular architectural project. This new type of drawing, appearing to follow a trend being established in similar drawings in the West, was accompanied by a growing interest within the architectural community in the nature of architectural drawing itself. This interest was profitably charted across the pages of the three dominant magazine publications of the period in South Korea, SPACE, Architecture and Culture, and Architecture and Environment. The new type of drawing raises questions of the role of representation in architecture, of the relationship between specific techniques for drawing and the kinds of ideas that drawings can express, and of how such ideas can change when the cultural context within which these techniques are developed also changes. We will present a framework in order to understand these questions by describing how architectural drawings work referentially, that is, how they depict, and how they can express qualities over and above what they depict. We follow this up with a general overview of the intellectual developments on the Korean architectural scene of the 1980s and early 1990s, showing how certain progressive architects motivated by developments in drawing techniques in the West were able to adapt them to address the issues of authenticity and identity in Korean architecture. Our description can only touch upon a small part of the rich material that is available, but our work will, we hope, reveal the complexity and depth that some of these drawings were able to achieve and instigate a deeper and more comprehensive study of them.
