논문 초록 (Abstract)

Many studies have shown that the degree of depression faced by older people is significantly affected by intergenerational solidarity. However, these studies do not demonstrate the specific relationship of how intergenerational solidarity affects the extent of old-age depression. A total of 2,917 older people extracted from the third wave of the Korean Longitudinal Study of Ageing were analysed to account for the limitations. The results showed that affectual solidarity and structural solidarity mediates and moderates, respectively, the association between associational solidarity and the level of depression of older people. Our analyses suggest both theoretical and policy implications. Theoretically, the old associational solidarity model should be re-designed by considering the mediating effect of the quality of relationship and the moderating effect of the geographical proximity. Practically, there are two meaningful ways of alleviating the degree of old-age depression together with more frequent contact by employing various communication channels. As adults, children share more positive emotional attachment with their older parents, while living closer to them, resulting in the likelihood of decreasing any conditions of depression. However, our results should be interpreted with discretion, in that the sample was only limited to South Koreans, and that the other three dimensions of intergenerational solidarities (i.e. functional solidarity, consensual solidarity, and normative solidarity) were not included.
