논문 초록 (Abstract)

This study evaluates the intrinsic catalytic activity of biochar (carbonized at 700, 800, and 900 °C) for tar cracking during two-stage high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pyrolysis. To decouple catalytic from thermal effects, biochar performance was benchmarked against inert Al2O3 spheres. A fixed-temperature decoupling series (700 °C) proved that the 700 °C-derived biochar (700-BC) provided superior upgrading, reducing the tar yield to 4.9 wt% compared to the 18.0 wt% baseline of Al2O3. Structural characterizations revealed that 700-BC preserves a high density of oxygen-functionalized defect sites and accessible surface acidity, which facilitate rapid radical stabilization. Conversely, biochar preparation at 900 °C triggers excessive aromatization and active-site depletion, shifting the reaction toward heavy tar accumulation. Although intrinsic dehydrogenation limitations restricted absolute H2 mass yields to 1.5–3.4 wt%, the biochar-packed bed successfully achieved high gasification (up to 99.1 wt%) by aggressively cracking heavy intermediates into light olefins. These findings establish optimal-temperature biochar as a robust, low-cost guard-bed material that mitigates tar fouling and stabilizes subsequent catalytic reforming processes for targeted plastic upcycling.
